By Times staff writer T-shirt design contest recognizes winnersChildren from 67 elementary schools competed in Drop Savers, a T-shirt design contest with a water conservation theme. The St. Petersburg Public Utilities Department recognized students in three divisions in the 15th annual event. Winners in the kindergarten and Grade 1 division were Shannon Davis, St. Paul's Catholic School, first place; Brianna Coffman, St. Petersburg Christian, second place; and Sabrina West, Westgate Elementary, third place. Second- and third-grade division winners were Cheryl Zimmerman, St. Petersburg Christian, first place; Stelly Sandoval, Clearview Elementary, second place; and Kaleigh Belanger, Azalea Elementary, third place. Winners in the fourth- and fifth-grade division were Kati Thomas, St. Petersburg Christian, first place; Chelsea Bonnain, Westgate Elementary, second place; and Stephanie Davis, St. Paul's Catholic School, third place. Each of the first-place winners also received honorable mention in the state Drop Savers contest. Culinary arts students scoop up fifth placeNine Northeast High culinary arts students participated last month in the Florida Restaurant Association's second annual ProStart culinary team competition. The school tied for fifth place among 37 groups. Competing in the gourmet meal category were Jordan Raynovich, Nick Vargas, Detraila Giles and Veronica Hill. Adam Vincent and Alyssa Clausen placed in the top 10 in the table setting category. Nick Johnston, Nicole Devore and Lindsay Irace placed third in the Knowledge Bowl. They each received a $1,000 scholarship from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. Keswick Christian student gets math awardPreston S. Baggerly II, son of Diane and Preston Baggerly of Seminole, is a United States Achievement Academy award winner in mathematics. One of his teachers at Keswick Christian nominated him for the national award. The United States Achievement Academy recognizes students for their academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, enthusiasm, and motivation to learn and improve. Boca Ciega senior named Academic All AmericanKatie Reid, daughter of Kathy L. Varriccnio and Dennis G. Reid of St. Petersburg, was named an Academic All American by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America. The honor is achieved by 2 percent of high school seniors who excel in both academics and athletics. A senior in the Center for Wellness and Medical Professions at Boca Ciega High, she has been a member of the swim team for four years, earning Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Player and Most Valuable Player awards. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society and earned a John Lynch Star of the Month and an Academic Order of Merit. She has been accepted in the premed program at the University of Miami, where she plans to pursue a degree in biology before attending medical school. She hopes to specialize in pediatric surgery. Boca Ciega junior will attend youth forumLauren DeLucia, daughter of Maryellen and Frank DeLucia of St. Petersburg, is a nominee for the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. She was invited to Washington, D.C., to attend a National Student Leadership Conference. A junior in the Center for Wellness and Medical Professions at Boca Ciega High, she is listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is president of the Boca Ciega Rotary Interact Club and received a Principal's Leadership Award and an Outstanding Achiever's Award for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. The Washington-based organization recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential and plan to pursue careers in medicine.
