Eicholtz, Sufficool, Ales top the list

BROOKSVILLE -- Three county athletes and three coaches were deemed best in their respective sports with the release of the All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference spring teams.

Springstead's Emily Eicholtz (softball) and Hernando's Andrew Sufficool and Central's Jen Ales (tennis) were named top athletes, and Hernando's Brett Teitelman (boys tennis), Central's Joe Nicolai (girls tennis) and Springstead's Fred Hudson (boys track) were honored as top coaches.

Eicholtz, a junior, went 17-6 with 76 strikeouts and a 0.92 earned-run average in the regular season and hit .354 with 8 doubles and 14 RBIs for the Eagles. Springstead went 19-7 and advanced to the Class 4A, Region 2 semifinals.

Sufficool, a senior bound for NCAA Division II Catawba (N.C.) College, was 20-3, won a district title and advanced to the second round of the Class 2A Florida Finals in doubles with teammate Eric Frechette.

Sufficool is the first Hernando boy to earn a full scholarship since 1988 graduate Jamie Benefield signed with Rice.

Ales, a senior, finished 14-3 but failed to advance to the Florida Finals after not winning a district title and the Bears fell in regional play.

Teitelman helped guide the Leopards to a turnaround 19-3 season that included conference and district crowns.

Nicolai's Bears went 14-2 and won a third straight district championship. Central also won the conference tournament.

Hudson was named top coach after leading the Eagles to county and GCAC titles.
