Let Mom let loose
By JOY DAVIS-PLATT, Times Staff Writer Take your mom for tea, take her shopping, or enjoy a fashion show with her. Let her choose. It's her day, after all, and Hernando County has several activities to offer. For those whose Mother's Day is a special occasion made nicer by the finer things, the Brooksville Heritage Museum offers its annual Mother's Day tea. The affair is more in line with a Victorian high tea than traditional afternoon teas and features more substantial fare. Small luxuries like lemon baskets and Victorian favors that set this event apart from other Mother's Day weekend celebrations, said Jan Knowles, president of the Hernando Historical Museum Association. Participants are encouraged to wear their best Sunday hats in honor of the occasion. The Mother's Day Victorian tea will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the May-Stringer House, 601 Museum Ct., in Brooksville. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children, and reservations are required. Call 799-0129. For something a bit more lively, the Latin American Civic & Cultural Association of Spring Hill will host a dance to honor mothers. For two decades, Ana Burgos has been a member of the club and said the event is intended to make mothers "queen for the night." "It's all very nice," said Burgos, who is helping organize this year's event. "The DJ plays all kinds of Latin music, Colombian, Puerto Rican, Cuban, all kinds." Tickets are $5 for members; $10 in advance for non-members and $15 at the door. Call 592-8494 or 683-6235. On Tuesday, The Brooksville-Spring Hill Christian Women's Club will hold a Mother Daughter Fashion Show and Luncheon featuring styles for the young and the young at heart at the Silverthorn Country Club, 4470 Golf Club Lane, Brooksville, off Barclay Avenue. Doors open at 11 a.m. and luncheon is from noon to 1:30 p.m. Child care will be provided and reservations are required. Call 799-3735 or 688-2824. The Airport Flea Market will celebrate Mother's Day on Sunday with a craft fair, the Bloodmobile, live entertainment and bargains. Admission to the flea market and craft show are free.
