Drums to begin today for weekend powwow
By MICHELLE JONES, Times Staff Writer DADE CITY -- Kids Day today kicks off the 11th annual Mother's Day Pow Wow at the Withlacoochee River Park. This three-day event will feature Ken Red Hawk Keller and his tribal funk band, American Indiandances with people dressed in full regalia, the traditional dancing of Johnny and Susan McDonald, who will serve as head man and head lady, American Indian foods, tours of the on-site authentic Indian village, and homemade arts and crafts for sale. The gates open at 9 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, gates open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Children from Pasco County schools are invited to tour the village today. They can play games and listen to stories of the many legends of American Indians and observe arts and crafts demonstrations. "All the events held within the park are co-hosted by the Withlacoochee American Indian Historical Society and the Pasco County Parks and Recreation (Department)," Keller said. All proceeds from the event will go to support the ongoing building projects and help maintain the beauty and historical culture of the Withlacoochee River Park." Admission is $7 per carload, and parking is free. Special color guard ceremonies at 7 p.m. Friday, 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday and at 1 p.m. Sunday will honor all war veterans, present military members, and domestic heroes, including firefighters, emergency medical technicians, police officers and sheriff's deputies. The drum will play an honor song for all mothers who attend, and mothers will be invited to dance a special dance. Families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, and campsites are available for weekend campers. Call the park at (352) 567-0264 for reservations. A Pow Wow Princess Pageant, a replication of Fort Dade, Indian displays and Plains Indian Tipi's will also be a part of the three-day event. Featured guests include the Family Drum from Palatka and the Indian flute played by Doc Green Silverhawk. Cindy Moon Star Middleton will tell stories that have been handed down through the generations, and Betty Denehy will sell her custom leather apparel.
