Forget brunch, take mom to pow wow

FREDRICKSEN, Times Staff Writer The Withlacoochee River Park will look like a page from the past today through Sunday as the Withlacoochee American Indian Historical Society and the Pasco County Parks and Recreation Department hold the 11th annual Mother's Day Pow Wow. Highlights include grand entries with various American Indian tribes represented in full regalia at 7 p.m. Friday, 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Pow Wow Princess Pageant coronation ceremony is at 4 p.m. Sunday. A traditional powwow is the exchange of cultures and traditions among American Indian peoples. This powwow invites the public to come learn about these things through tours of the recreated Indian villages, a replica of Fort Dade, story tellers, exhibits and displays, handmade arts and crafts, American Indian foods, Plains Indians tepee and American Indian musicians. Performers include the Family Drum from Palatka, Head Man and Head Lady dancers Johnny and Susan McDonald, and flute player Doc Green, whose Indian name is Silverhawk. Storyteller is Cindy "Moon Star" Middleton. Leather crafter "Leather Betty" will exhibit and sell her handmade garments and decorator objects. The tribal funk band RedHawk will perform throughout the three-day event. The powwow has several special events, games and activities for children. Those who attend are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and insect repellent.
