Area players shoot for Open

Fourteen North Suncoast golfers will attempt to capture a U.S. Open berth by participating in local qualifiers next week.

Spring Hill's Bruce Wesson and Glenn Gabriel failed to make the cut at Westin Innisbrook on Wednesday.

Joey Ludeman, an assistant pro at GlenLakes, Todd Westfall, an assistant at World Woods, and Rusty Stocker, a professional from Homosassa, will tee off May 20 at Grasslands Golf & Country Club in Lakeland.

El Diablo Golf and Country Club in Citrus Springs will have a qualifier Thursday.

Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y., will play host to the U.S. Open from June 13-16. The tournament is open to any players with a United States Golf Association handicap not greater than 1.4.

At 105 local qualifying sites (17 in Florida), golfers not exempt will compete in an 18-hole stroke play event.

A percentage, determined by size of field, of the top golfers advance to sectional qualifying. The 36-hole sectional rounds will be played at 12 sites and help determine the final field of 156.

CAMP: GlenLakes will have its annual sports camp for children 6-13. It is scheduled for 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. July 2-5 and August 6-9.

Each camper will receive an hour of professional golf instruction, swimming and tennis. The fee is $130.

The annual Hernando County Gator Club scholarship fund raiser is scheduled for Thursday at Brooksville Golf & Country Club.

A $60 fee includes the 18-hole scramble and dinner. Registration begins at noon. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Proceeds benefit the Gator Club scholarship fund for county high school seniors.

The Jerome Brown Golf Classic is set for 1 p.m. June 1 at World Woods.

Brooksville Golf & Country Club will have the Junior Open (18 holes of stroke play) at 1 p.m. June 15.

The eighth annual Citrus Hills Summer Church League begins May 21.

The league plays on Tuesday afternoons, using a nine-hole quota points system. Foursomes consist of members from at least two different churches.
