BROOKSVILLE -- Injuries forced Hernando's Becky Ellis and Christene Dennis to play more than one position this season.

It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as their versatility caught the eye of Pasco-Hernando Community College coach Tom Ryan.

Ellis and Dennis plan to sign with the Conquistadors today at the high school.

They will bring to 12 the number of Hernando players who have signed with colleges in coach Ernie Chatman's six years. Three have signed this season, including Kimi Olmstead, who committed to Colgate in February.

"When they see somebody can play several different positions, it's attractive," Chatman said.

Despite a broken finger, Ellis caught and played right field after transferring from South Sumter as a senior.

A good bunter with a sharp eye, she had a team-leading five sacrifice bunts and 11 walks, the second-most on the squad. Her diving catch in the outfield preserved a 5-3 victory over Citrus.

Ellis was drawn to PHCC after attending a camp there in the summer. She plans to study medicine.

Dennis saw playing time in the outfield as a freshman, and had her role increase as she got older. She played outfield and designated hitter as a sophomore, then moved into the infield for her junior season.

Dennis played catcher, first base, second base and third base this year and "has the potential to play shortstop," Chatman said.

A versatile player who bunts and runs well, Dennis batted .316 with 2 doubles, 2 triples and 11 RBIs this past season. Her 99 putouts were second-most on the team, behind Ellis' 116.
