Two drivers hurt by hitting houses
By Times staff writer First it happened in Land O'Lakes. Marilyn Denig got a call from a neighbor telling her that a car had crashed into her house. Dan Helphrey of New Port Richey got the same call about 4:30 p.m. A sport utility vehicle had smashed into his porch. Two drivers were injured Wednesday during two separate wrecks in which their vehicles hit houses, Pasco County Fire Rescue officials said. They said neither woman suffered life-threatening injuries. Neither of the drivers' names were available. Both houses were empty during the wrecks, the owners said. At 9:23 a.m., a woman who was seven months' pregnant drove her Honda Accord through at least 30 feet of front yard and broke through cinder block wall into an empty garage at 22105 Heatherwood Lane in Land O'Lakes. "I'll work this out," said Denig, the homeowner, "but I'm worried about the woman." Battalion Chief James Maynard of Pasco County Fire Rescue said the woman, 33, was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa with back and chest pain. He said the injuries did not appear to threaten her pregnancy. A similar scene unfolded at 4:32 p.m. in Veterans Village. A woman driving a Ford Explorer north on Laird Drive sped through a stop sign at Lassen Avenue, drove through the curve at Wentworth Way, plowed through a chain-link fence and slammed into a porch pillar at 7021 Wentworth Way, said witness Sean Stepien. "There was dust and everything," he said. "She got airborne." Fire rescue officials said the woman was flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
