'More confident' Terrell picks up major victory

Kim Terrell earned her second major women's championship by winning the Queens title and $18,000 last week during the WIBC Championships Tournament at South Milwaukee.

Terrell, last year's U. S. Women's Open champion, defeated Cocoa's Kim Adler 227-214 for her seventh professional title. Adler earned $12,000. Third was Kari Schwager, a junior at the University of Nebraska who waived her third-place check of $7,550 to retain amateur status. Kirsten Penny was fourth with $6,560 earned and Cara Honeychurch finished fifth, good for $4,440.

Terrell was the tournament's top qualifier, setting the WIBC Queens' match-play average mark at 240. She rolled five consecutive 700-plus series during match-play. Adler defeated Penny and Honeychurch 278-201-190 in the opening shootout and beat Schwager 225-205 to reach the finals.

"Coming into this tournament I felt I was a better bowler than I was last season." Terrell said. "I'm more confident and I think my new coach has helped me bring more athleticism to my game."

Other Florida competitors were Jennifer Bedner, Kendra Gaines and Lucy Sandelin.

The Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) tour is at St. Clair Shores, Mich., for its second spring stop. The finals will be on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

WIBC UPDATE: The High Rollers team from Cherry Hill, N.J., broke the WIBC Tournament's Classic Division mark with a 3,327 series last week.

Pros Wendy Macpherson, and Carol Gianotti were joined by amateurs Jill Albrecht, Gina Daroszewski and Marliss Tapp to make up the squad. Macpherson, Gianotti and Tapp were on the 2000 winning team.

The Division 1 team mark also fell to USA-Japan No. 1, which rolled 2,969.

Honeychurch broke the WIBC Classic all-events record by three pins with a 2,150 pinfall. Theresa Smith rolled a 752 series to take over first in the Classic singles race.

NEFF WINS FIFTH: Steve Neff defeated reigning PBA Senior Player of the Year Bob Glass 214-193 to win his fifth senior title and $8,000 in the PBA Senior Chillicothe Open in Ohio on April 30. Neff, from Homosassa Springs, picked up his fourth win as the tournament leader in the seniors' first event of an 11-stop tour. Glass earned $4,500. Neff returned to the tour last year after a long layoff.

"I feel like I'm ready to have a big year," said Neff, who owns a center in his hometown. "I've never been on top in my career, senior or national, but now I'm ready."

Glass beat first-time finalist John Hunt 216-213, then stopped Chuck Pierce 278-258 to reach the finals. Hunt earned $3,500, Pierce took home $3,000 and Guppy Troup finished fifth for $2,500.

Bob Chamberlain defeated Glass 248-173 to win the PBA Senior Pennsylvania Open at Sinking Springs, Penn., two weeks ago, the second consecutive week that Glass lost in the final five.
