Art gallery on the shore

Treasure Island, once home to the world's largest sand castle, this weekend will be filled with sand art by sculptors from around North America, including hometown sculptor Dan Doubleday, shown above working on a castle during Super Bowl week in 2000.

The sculptors will compete for the American Masters Cup grand prize. Spectators can watch the artists create, plus listen to live music and visit food vendors. Beach blankets and chairs are welcome; coolers are prohibited.

The events are free on the Treasure Island beach at 104th Avenue and Gulf Boulevard. Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Call (727) 360-6957 for more information.

New exhibit takes wing

A little bit of the popular National Air and Space Museum in Washington is on display at the Florida International Museum: 25 aircraft models, including XXXX. The exhibit is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and will be at the St. Petersburg museum through July 7.

On Saturday, children ages 6 to 12 who visit the museum can get free model airplanes. (They must be accompanied by a parent.) Members of the Pelikan Model Club of the Pinellas Suncoast and the Manatee Scale Modelers will be on hand to help at the two scheduled workshops (10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m.). Reservations are required for the free workshops; call (727) 822-3693, ext. 295.

The museum is at 100 Second St. N, St. Petersburg. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors and $6 for ages 6 to 18. For more information, call (727) 822-3693 or check www.floridamuseum.org.

A quick (inexpensive) trip to Australia

The Lowry Park Zoo cuts admission to $2 a person Sunday for its annual Community Day. You can check out all the exhibits, including the new Wallaroo Station Australian-themed area, shown here, for just a few bucks.

Regular admission is $9.50 adults, $8.50 for 50 and older and $5.95 ages 3 to 11. The zoo is at 1101 W Sligh Ave., Tampa. (813) 935-8552or www.lowryparkzoo.com. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
