For fans of remote control

Here it is, the ultimate remote control that does everything but wash the dishes. Hunter Fan has just introduced the fan-video universal remote control. It controls all the functions of any brand of fan (on-off, speeds and light dimming), and also controls the TV, VCR, DVD, cable and satellite systems. Now if only it would answer the door and start the microwave. It's $95, available at Lowe's and other retailers that sell Hunter fans; visit www.hunterfan.com or call toll-free 1-800-448-6837.

Remodeling means real spending

This is National Remodeling Month, a good time to acknowledge that home improvement spending topped $843-billion from 1990 to 1999 in the nation's top 35 metropolitan areas. That's a lot of plywood, nuts and bolts. It includes projects such as room additions, kitchen and bath upgrades, and replacements of major systems such as air-conditioning and plumbing. Spending in the Tampa Bay area during that period was $5.1-billion. In each of the past 15 years, about 1-million homeowners nationwide spent more than $10,000 on a major kitchen or bathroom remodel, an addition or other major alteration. And those major outlays typically generate additional spending, for furnishings, appliances, accessories and audio or video equipment.
