Valedictorian David Dey, left, and salutatorian Desiree Cook will join 26 others graduating from Withlacoochee Technical Institute.
INVERNESS -- At tonight's Withlacoochee Technical Institute graduation, 28 high school students will receive diplomas while another 57 will be recognized for passing the GED.

Two students stand out for their academic achievements. David Dey is the 2002 WTI valedictorian, and Desiree Cook is the salutatorian.

Dey, 17, started attending WTI when he was a junior for the electronics program. While at Citrus High School, he was in ROTC. He said his postgraduation plans are "most likely going into the military."

Dey said he plans to attend college through the military. He is interested in piloting and electronics. He hopes to receive training with night-vision equipment, missile-targeting systems and other electronic equipment.

He said he will miss "hanging out with classmates, friends (and) my great teachers" when he leaves high school. David is the son of Thomas and Josephine Dey of Inverness.

Cook, 17, will finish high school tonight with her diploma and an accounting certificate. She started at WTI in January 2001. She said she attended WTI to work at a faster pace. She liked the smaller classrooms and the availability of the teachers.

Some of her classes were special because she could help other students. "It made me feel needed," she said.

She said she will also miss her teachers, whom she credits with her success. They motivated her, she said.

Cook said she is now trained to work as a file clerk or in county operations. What she would like to do, she said, is work her way up to eventually owning her own business.

Cook is engaged to Robert Hart, a landscaper in Ocala. She is the daughter of Linda and Donald Cook.

If you go

Withlacoochee Technical Institute graduation is at 7 tonight at Curtis Peterson Auditorium, Lecanto.
