Two Bulls on 2nd team

South Florida shortstop Myron Leslie was chosen to the All-Conference USA second team for the second straight time. Leslie, a sophomore from Brandon, made the team as a third baseman his freshman season.

Freshman third baseman Jeff Baisley, who leads the Bulls in batting average (.357) and RBI (57), was the other USF player named to the second team. Baisley, from Land O'Lakes, and catcher Devin Ivany were named to the C-USA all-freshman team.

Also, Louisville's Lelo Prado, once coach at Tampa, was named C-USA coach of the year after leading the team (39-13) to its best regular season.

MORE BASEBALL: Vanderbilt coach Roy Mewbourne retired after going 655-608-9 in 24 seasons. ... Kansas coach Bobby Randall resigned after the Jayhawks missed the Big 12 tourney. ... Clemson infielders Khalil Greene and Jeff Baker, North Carolina infielder Russ Adams, Rutgers pitcher Bobby Brownlie and Stanford pitcher Jeremy Guthrie are finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the top amateur player.

BASKETBALL: Former La Salle player Kareem Townes was sentenced to 10 years in prison with no chance for parole after pleading guilty to selling crack cocaine to an undercover drug agent.

FOOTBALL: Former Western Carolina running back Toren Gordon was sentenced to at least five years in prison for the fatal shooting of a man outside a nightclub in December. He was convicted late last week of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Corey Jermon Matthews, 29. ... The participation of an NCAA investigator in today's interview with two LSU teachers who have alleged academic wrongdoing against athletes will be welcome, their attorney said.

TENNIS: Rain canceled the first day of the women's singles championships in Stanford, Calif., where Jessica Lehnhoff and Lindsay Dawaf represent Florida. Both are in singles and form the No. 3 seeded doubles team. ... Freshman Prakash Amritraj beat Adam Carey to lead No. 11 seed Southern Cal over No. 2 Tennessee 4-3 in the semifinals of the men's championships at College Station, Texas. Georgia and UCLA met late Monday in the other semifinal.

WOMEN'S GOLF: South Florida and Florida start play today at the NCAA Championships in Auburn, Wash., as the only two state teams to make the 24-school field.

USF: Associate athletic director Michael Kelly left to run the 2005 Super Bowl in Jacksonville. Kelly was in charge of the 1999 Final Four at Tropicana Field and the 2001 Super Bowl at Raymond James Stadium.
