BRIEFS

Prekindergarten Services Application Day for the Head Start/School Readiness program will be held from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the following locations: Southeast: Alice Hall, 38116 Fifth Ave., Zephyrhills. April Star Students for Sand Pine Elementary: Mitchell Oliveri -- First grade from Coral Reefs; Daniel Spence -- Second grade from Mangroves; Hayden Curry -- First grade from Seascapes; Lauren Lawton -- Kindergarten from Wetlands; Evan Reidy -- Fourth grade from Everglades; Alex Vonderheide -- Fourth grade from Hammocks; Kara Williams -- Fifth grade from Springs. Tropicana Speech winners from Sand Pine: First place winner was Michael Moran, his topic was "A Day with Mom." Second place was Myia Otkins, her topic was Nothing. Third place was April Candelaria, her topic was about astronauts. Contestants gave a two-to-three minute speech, and were judged 50 percent on presentation and 50 percent on the composition of the speech. These students will go onto a district competition.

Wesley Chapel High School's National Spanish Honor Society contributed much throughout the school year. Their pet projects included: a clothing drive for Nicaragua, Adopt A Road, and an Eye Glass Drive for the people of Cuba. These Future Business Leaders of America were named winners in the state competition held in Orlando: Chris Cordero: fifth place for Computer Concepts; Amanda Witkowski: fifth place for Future Business Leader; Marie Larracas, Stephanie Lazo: second place in Digital Design. Marie and Stephanie will compete this summer at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Nashville. Math teacher Catherine Haight placed second in the Superintendent's Award for Excellence in Teaching Economics-High School Innovations category. Her project is being entered in the Governor's Awards for excellence in Teaching Economics Program.

Land O'Lakes High School student Peter Rossi finished third in the Earth and Space Science category at the State Science and Engineering Fair.

The Stewart Middle School chapter of the FFA attended the FFA District Ornamental Horticulture Demonstration Contest on April 11. Winners were: Christina Lima-Jones, third place in Use Category; Jesse Holden, third place Artistic Management; Kristen Hartman, third place Marketing; Kim Therrien, third place Landscaping. These students were named winners in the school annual speech contest: Sixth-grade: First, Sarah Hinkle; Second, Zach Goodwin; Third, Tara Peabody; Fourth, Zach Will. Seventh-grade: First place Humorous, Teresa Doolittle; First place Informative, Yin Yin Wi; First Place Persuasive, Elizabeth Kelly. Chess Tournament winners: Moderate division: First place, Matthew Pellek; Third place, William Green. Advanced Division: First place (tie), George Snyder, Ryan Alderman; Second place, Brendon Edge.
