    Summer camp scholarships are available

    LARGO -- Scholarships for Largo students participating in the free or reduced school lunch program are available for summer camp, circus camp, and golf and tennis camp. Rotary International Foundation has donated money for 20 scholarships valued at $50 each for enrollment in any summer camp sponsored by the Largo Recreation, Parks & Arts Department. The Juvenile Welfare Board has given the city 22 scholarships for teen camp and three for circus camp. The scholarships are valued at $50 a week or $400 for the eight-week teen camp. Golf and tennis camp offers four hours of instruction in both golf and tennis by a coaching professional. A tennis sports camp also is available. These scholarships are valued at $34 a week or $272 for the eight-week camp. For information, call Joan Byrne at 518-3125.

    Tour of palms, hibiscus program on Saturday

    LARGO -- A tour of palms at Florida Botanical Gardens and a program on how to propagate hibiscus are planned for Saturday morning at the gardens. Naturalist and palm enthusiast Jerry Shrewsbury will lead an hourlong tour starting at 9 a.m. at the Palm Pavilion. On the tour, he will talk about the varieties of palms, their growth characteristics and requirements. The tour is free. At 10 a.m. in Auditorium A, horticulturist Dale Armstrong will talk about hibiscus hybridizing techniques and how to propagate them by cutting, air layers and grafting. The program is free, but reservations are requested by calling 582-2124. Florida Botanical Gardens is at 12175 125th St. N, Largo.

    Children's summer camp planned in Largo

    LARGO -- A summer camp for children in kindergarten through Grade 5 will run from June 10 through Aug. 2 at Rogate Lutheran Church, 4825 East Bay Drive. Activities include arts and crafts, field trips, swimming, sports and games. The camp costs $58 a week for Largo residents and $72.50 for non-residents.
