Jazz, the way it was

At a time when jazz has been almost completely marginalized, Warren Leight's memory play Side Man evokes a bygone world where the likes of Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie loomed large on the cultural scene. It was all blown away by the advent of rock 'n' roll in the view of Leight, son of a New York jazz man, whose play won the 1999 Tony Award for best new play. Nancy Gole directs a cast that includes, above, Angela Bond and Jon Van Middlesworth in a Gorilla Theatre production that opens tonight and runs through June 9. Show times are 7 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday, 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets: $19 and $22. (813) 879-2914.

Love, American style?

The comedy You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running is three shows in one, all with the theme of sex and the human condition.

In "The Shock of Recognition," a playwright believes that his lead character must appear in the nude to make his show work, but his producer thinks the nudity is unnecessary. Act Two, "The Footsteps of Doves," has a long-married couple quarrelling over how large a bed they need. The final act, "I'm Herbert," has an elderly couple reminiscing about their love affairs, but getting the details confused.

"The show is risque, but it's done tastefully," said director Michael O. Smith, who also has the lead role in the third act. "This show was written in the '60s, but like any good comedy, it holds up."

You Know is at Angel Cabaret Theatre, 5201 U.S. 19, New Port Richey (Southgate Shopping Center) opening Friday, and running through June 30, at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 6 p.m. Sundays, 1:30 p.m. some Saturdays. Doors open two hours before each show for buffet and cash wine and beer bar. Dinner and show, $32.50; show only, $19.95, plus tax and tip. Call (727) 847-0019.
