Prominent lawyer, public official

A north-south thoroughfare is named for him, as is one of Hyde Park's grandest homes.

The beautifully imposing neo-classical mansion at 801 S Delaware Ave. was built by a good lawyer. Its current owner, Steven Green, could probably use such karma.

The Yonkers, N.Y., man owns several rental properties in Tampa and currently faces the largest single-owner code enforcement case ever presented in Hillsborough County.

William F. Himes had a better local profile. So much so that a lengthy north-south artery was named for him. His name is also attached to what some consider Old Hyde Park's grandest house -- a 1911 manse additionally named for its second owner, prominent banker James Griffin.

Himes was born in New Orleans in 1879, and arrived in Tampa in 1902 to practice law. He held several public offices, including attorney for the County Board of Education, city attorney and state senator. He was also president of the Hillsborough County Bar Association and a member of the First Methodist Church of Tampa.

He died in 1949 at age 70.
