Senior tennis team advances to nationals

The USTA Senior Men's 4.5 Team from the Country Club of Carrollwood beat a Fort Lauderdale team last week to advance to the national championships this fall in California.

The team, led by captain Pierce Kelley, took the sectional championship Monday at the Naples Bath and Tennis Club. No. 1 doubles Alex Deeb and Dave Bullock won their pro-set match 8-6; No. 2 doubles Terry Payton and Jesse Thompson won 8-4; and the No. 3 team of Pierce and Tug Miller won 8-6.

The United States Tennis Association senior team is for players 50 and older. The Carrollwood team will compete for the national championship Oct. 24-27 in Palm Springs.

Get scoop on fall sports at Sickles

CITRUS PARK -- The coaches at Sickles High School have scheduled two informational meetings on fall sports. Students planning to join the cross country, football, golf, swimming, volleyball and cheerleading teams should attend one of the meetings. Coaches will provide paperwork and information about tryouts and practices.

Meetings will be at 6 p.m. June 11 and July 18 in the school auditorium. For information, call 631-4742.

Benefit golf tournament is Saturday

COUNTRYWAY -- The Logan's Day Golf Tournament will be held Saturday at the Countryway Golf Course, 11111 W Waters Ave. The event is being held in honor of Logan Bauder, a 1-year-old from Westchase diagnosed with cystic fibrosis last year.

Registration for the four-person scramble will begin at noon, followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The cost is $50 per player or $400 for a corporate team. Proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Sponsorships and donations are needed.

SUMMER CAMPS

Bay Crest Elementary offers camps

TOWN 'N COUNTRY -- Bay Crest Elementary school will offer two summer camps from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 3-28. Students from kindergarten through fifth grade may choose from a sports camp or a varied activities camp, which will include cooking, art projects, maskmaking and decoupage. Cost is $240 for the first child, $220 for additional children. For information or registration, call 872-5382.

Kids can head to the country club

NEW TAMPA -- Heritage Isles Golf and Country Club is registering children ages 5 to 12 for its summer camp. Activities include arts and crafts, swimming and other sports in an open country setting.

The camp runs for nine weeks, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from June 3 through Aug. 2. Price per week is $110 for pass holders, $120 for others. Extended hours, 7:30 to 6 p.m., are available for an additional fee.

Half-day camp will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at $70 for pass holders, $75 for others. The country club is at 10630 Plantation Bay Drive. For information or registration forms, call 907-7388.

Campers to dabble in science, business

CARROLLWOOD -- Ben Hill Middle School is offering weekly camp sessions in science and business in June.

In "Rocket Science," students learn model rocketry in hands-on activities that incorporate science and math. The two sessions run June 3-7 and June 17-21. Cost is $80 a session. In "Science Olympics," students compete in science-based events from the National Middle School Science Olympiad. The session runs June 10-14 and costs $80. In "Wanted: Entrepreneurs," participants learn business practices such as creating and marketing a product and producing advertising. The session runs June 17-28 and costs $120.

Camps run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Extended day care is available. Students must bring a bag lunch and provide transportation. The school is at 5200 Ehrlich Road.

Summer tennis for ages 4 to 18

CARROLLWOOD -- The Country Club of Carrollwood is registering students for its summer tennis camp, which begins June 3.

The club offers programs for various age groups and experience levels. The tots program introduces 4- to 7-year-olds to tennis. Juniors, 8 to 18, work on individual skills and match play. Advanced juniors, 8 to 18, focus on strategy, technical skills and competitive play.

Nine sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays through Aug. 2. Coach Chris Cary said a perk of the program is the cooldown swim in the club pool at the end of the camp day.

Cost is $120 per weekly session for country club members, $150 for guests. Discounts are available for multiple children and sessions.

Soccer offered for ages 5 to 15

KEYSTONE -- Hillsborough County United is holding five soccer camps for girls and boys 5 to 15.

Camps will be held from 9 a.m. to noon June 3-7, June 10-14, June 24-28, July 8-12 and July 15-19. The cost is $100 per player per week. Cost for groups of eight or more is $75 each.
