Truck crash litters Cortez with rock, fuel
By JAMIE JONES, Times Staff Writer BROOKSVILLE -- Robert Bushey was turning his Peterbilt onto a private driveway off Cortez Boulevard Tuesday morning when a semitrailer truck hit him from behind. Both trucks flipped on their sides, leaving the two drivers pinned in the cabs as windows shattered and diesel fuel spilled on the roadside. Neither driver was seriously injured. "Thank God for seat belts," said Bushey, 54. "I'll probably be sore tomorrow." Bushey, a United Road Service employee, said he had driven his truck and car carrier from Weirsdale to pick up paperwork in Brooksville before heading to New York. He said he was slowly turning onto a driveway about 2 miles east of Brooksville when a semitrailer struck him. His truck flipped on its side, and emergency workers helped Bushey climb out of the passenger side. The other truck was driven by Alan S. Pickett, 37, who lives in Georgia, authorities said. An FHP trooper said Pickett failed to slow down and slammed into Bushey. Pickett was taken to Brooksville Regional Hospital with minor injuries, authorities said. When Pickett ran into Bushey, a large load of decorative rock flew off the back of Pickett's truck. Traffic was clogged in westbound lanes, and county workers brought loads of sand to absorb spilled fuel. Pickett's truck had about $40,000 worth of damage and Bushey's had $30,000, authorities said. Charges are pending against Pickett, the FHP said. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
