Woman, grandchild burned in blazeBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published June 1, 2002 TAMPA -- A woman and her 2-year-old granddaughter were badly burned Friday night in a fire at their home. Fire crews responded to 3003 N 43rd St. at about 6:30 p.m. after receiving calls of flames pouring out of a front window. When they entered through the back, firefighters found Voncile Smiley, 63, lying on the floor next to a sliding glass door, which had been smashed. Her granddaughter, Adrianna Madison, was in the hallway. The victims were taken to Tampa General Hospital, where they were listed in critical condition late Friday. Smiley had burns over a third of her body. The toddler had burns over 90 percent of her body. Smiley lives in the house with her husband, Joe Madison, and Alicia Madison, the mother of Adrianna. Neither was home at the time of the fire. The cause of the blaze is unknown, but it does not appear suspicious, said Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade. The home did not have a smoke detector. Property damage was estimated at $55,000. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
