TC coach resigns

TAMPA -- Saying he wants to spend more time with his family, Tampa Catholic coach Chuck Yingling resigned this week.

"There's just so much to do," Yingling said. "I think I need a break. I've been doing this a long time and I was starting to doubt whether I wanted to be a head coach any more."

Yingling, 52, coached the Crusaders for seven years, leading them to the playoffs every year, collecting three region championships and two state titles (1996 and 2001) along the way.

In a letter to Tampa Catholic principal Brother David McMahon, Yingling wrote that he had "given over 25 years to the game of baseball and now it's time to give it to my family."

Yingling, a physical education teacher at Seminole Heights Elementary for the past 31 years, has a career record of 152-55, including this season when the Crusaders went 18-11 before losing in the region quarterfinals.

This summer will be the first time since 1968 that Yingling hasn't been involved with a baseball team in some way. "I know I'll coach again. I may come back as an assistant where I can teach more instead of being the buffer zone when problems come up," Yingling said. "In the meantime, my wife and I have already planned a couple vacations for this summer."
