TAMPA -- Delivery driver Adel Ahmed was willing to let the thief get away with the wings and lemonade, he said Sunday.

But someone in a crowd yelled "get him," he said, and he feared for his life.

He pulled a 9mm handgun from his waistband, stuck his arm out his car window, fired two shots into the crowd, then drove away.

"It was my only chance of walking out of there alive," he said.

While questioned later by police, Ahmed learned one of those shots had killed Tyrone Stephens, 15, who Ahmed said had taken the food. Learning he had killed someone "was shocking, of course," Ahmed said. "But I was scared."

Ahmed, 22, is a cook for his family's business, Wings and Things, on N Albany Avenue. Friday night the store was short delivery boys, so he took his Ford Probe about 8:45 p.m.

He said he was familiar with the customer but was given a different address, one that police later said doesn't exist.

Ahmed said he was lost in the Robles Park area when he slowed to ask someone directions. It was Tyrone Stephens. The teen seemed to stall, Ahmed said, and then reached into the car and took the food.

Ahmed said about 10 people in front of his car moved toward him. He said he feared someone might get his gun.

"I have a newborn," he said. "I have a family."

Police questioned him early Saturday morning and let him go. A police spokeswoman said investigators were interviewing witnesses Sunday. The State Attorney's Office will review the case.
