Blaze in home traced to faulty bedroom lamp

HILL 'N DALE -- A home on Kevin Kelly Avenue was partially destroyed in a fire at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Sam Ashley, 16, told authorities he was sleeping in his living room at 27016 Kevin Kelly Ave. when his two friends, who had been playing video games, woke him up and said they smelled something. Ashley smelled smoke and woke his stepfather, Dwayne Holloman, and they left the house.

Authorities said the fire likely started because of a faulty bedroom lamp, and the house had about $50,000 in damage.

Deputies investigate case of neglected animals

BROOKSVILLE -- Authorities are investigating the death of a dog south of Brooksville.

Sheriff's deputies received an anonymous tip that three dogs had been abandoned at 7364 Mitchell Road, south of Brooksville.

At the house, deputies discovered a dead brown chow chow, which appeared to have choked after getting tangled in a chain. They found two other dogs, as well as two pet birds in a cage. None of the animals had food or water, authorities said.

Neighbors told deputies that the homeowners had been gone for about five weeks.

The owners, Wilfredo Flores and Eugina Alonso, told deputies they had left town for work, and the dogs belonged to a friend who apparently had left town. The pets were picked up by Animal Control on Saturday.

No charges had been filed as of Monday.
