SAINT LEO -- Cyle Sage is not just looking for runners. Saint Leo's new cross country coach wants them to swim and ride a bicycle as well.

Hired Saturday to replace Jubie Aulisio, who now coaches at Florida Southern, Sage will coach the Saint Leo men's and women's teams. With a background in swimming and as a triathlete, Sage is recruiting runners who also plan to compete in triathlons.

And Sage plans to be with the Lions every step of the way.

"That'll be motivating for them to try to beat the coach, so to speak," Sage said.

Only two male and three female runners ran cross country for Saint Leo last season. That group included freshman Scott Habershaw, who earned All-Sunshine Athletic Conference honors in cross country, swimming and track at Land O'Lakes.

Sage, 36, is recruiting local runners for a junior triathlon June 30 at San Antonio.

Before accepting the Saint Leo position, Sage coached the Junior Triathlon National team and was the athletic development director at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

"I've always wanted to coach at the collegiate level," Sage said. "I relish the challenge of running a program and trying to build the numbers."

Sage is a 1988 Tennessee graduate and is certified to coach triathlons and swimming. He earned a swimming scholarship to Miami in 1984. Born in Las Vegas, Nev., Sage was in the Navy Reserves in 1998-2001 and was on the All-Navy Triathlon team. He captained that team in 2000.

PHCC SIGNING: Central shortstop Lindsay Grey signed Tuesday with Pasco-Hernando Community College. Grey led Hernando County with a .397 average and was a four-year starter for the Bears. She plays for the Clearwater Bombers travel team.
