One receiver visits Bucs; another visiting today

TAMPA -- The Bucs entertained free-agent receiver Derrick Alexander on Wednesday and Keenan McCardell is expected in town today.

The Bucs, in the market for a starting receiver to play opposite Keyshawn Johnson, are said to be partial to McCardell, who was released for salary-cap reasons Monday by the Jaguars. But if a deal can't be reached, Alexander appears sold after being let go by Kansas City.

"Hopefully we can get something worked out because I would really like to be here," Alexander said just before leaving One Buc Place. "It just feels like a good situation and I know some of the coaches and it's not a bad place to live. ... I feel comfortable down here. We'll see how it works out."

The Bucs seemingly can't go wrong with either player. McCardell, listed as 6 feet 1 and 191 pounds, consistently has put up big numbers in his 10-year career, including last season when he had 93 catches for 1,110 yards and six touchdowns.

McCardell, 32, flourished in Jacksonville in a similar role he would have with the Bucs. He and Jimmy Smith are one of six tandems to post concurrent 1,000-yard seasons three times.

"I'm open to anything right now. I'm a young person," McCardell said this spring. "I feel I can play another four or five years."

Alexander, 6-2 and 206 pounds, had surpassed or come close to 1,000 yards receiving each of the past five seasons before 2001, setting a single-season team record with 1,391 yards in 2000. Last season he had 27 catches for 470 yards.

He could contribute big-play capabilities to the Bucs. He had catches of 20 or more yards 20 times in 1998 and 24 times in 2000, the two highest totals in club history. He also had 10 plays of at least 64 yards, seven of which went for touchdowns.

Alexander, 30, said he could put up similar numbers with Tampa Bay, particularly playing opposite Johnson, who led the NFC in catches last season.

"If I came down here, it would be kind of tough for defenses to try to key on one guy," Alexander said.

McCardell is talking with several teams. Alexander visited with New England and Minnesota before coming to Tampa.

NOTE: Long-snapper Andy Hogan and punters Tim Morgan and Mike Abrams were released.

Dolphins to retire Csonka's No. 39

MIAMI -- Former Dolphins fullback Larry Csonka will become the third player to have his jersey number retired by the team.

Csonka, who wore No. 39 from 1968 to 1974 and again in 1979, will join former quarterbacks Bob Griese and Dan Marino in receiving the honor, the team announced.

Csonka was the leading rusher for the team that achieved the NFL's only perfect season in 1972, and again in 1973 when Miami repeated as the Super Bowl champion. He remains the team's career rushing leader with 6,737 yards and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987.

The Dolphins will honor Csonka at halftime of their game against the Bears on Dec. 9.

BILLS: Free-agent running back Richard Huntley, who led Carolina in rushing last season, signed. Terms were not disclosed.

CHARGERS: Linebacker Donny Green, who played in two games as a rookie last season, signed a one-year contract. San Diego is Green's fifth team. He went to training camp with Buffalo last year, was waived and signed with Washington. He played in the season opener at San Diego and was waived the next week. He signed with Dallas' practice squad on Nov. 29, then signed with Jacksonville, playing in one game.

JAGUARS: Free-agent guard Daryl Terrell signed after playing the past three seasons with the Saints.

Terrell, 27, appeared in 45 games for New Orleans, including every game the past two seasons. He started nine games at tackle last season in place of the injured Willie Roaf and one game at guard.

RAIDERS: A Superior Court judge in Los Angeles ruled the team must share stadium revenues with 31 other league teams under the league's revenue-sharing rules. Judge Richard Hubbell issued his decision Monday. It was the final part of two phases in a lawsuit from last year.

TITANS: Rookie defensive end Albert Haynesworth, the team's top pick in the draft, had fights with offensive linemen after consecutive plays in workouts.

The incidents followed Tuesday's brief tussle with a fellow rookie, and Haynesworth could not return for the conclusion of Wednesday's workout because of exhaustion.

"He's going to grow out of it.," coach Jeff Fisher said. "It's part of the learning experience."

VIKINGS: A district judge in Minneapolis narrowed the negligence lawsuit brought against the team by the family of Korey Stringer, who collapsed in the heat at a training camp practice in August and later died.

The Vikings in February asked Hennepin County District Judge Gary Larson to dismiss the 10-count lawsuit. Larson narrowed the number of plaintiffs in the lawsuit to Stringer's widow, Kelci, saying Minnesota law only permits wrongful death claims to be made by the trustee of the estate of the person who died.

The judge also dismissed three of the 10 counts, including the accusation that the Vikings intended to cause Stringer's injury.
