Countryside's Taylor Yanchar, the county's biggest player this past basketball season at 6-foot-10, has signed with Western Carolina. Yanchar asked to be redshirted in the fall. He blocked a school-record 59 shots and shot 60 percent from the floor for the Cougars.

East Lake's Greg Cummings, a second-team all-county basketball pick, has committed to West Point while teammate Dalen Cuff will play at New York's Columbia University. Cummings, a 6-6 center for East Lake who will play forward in college, will likely attend a prep school before enrolling at West Point according to Eagles coach Joe Bloznalis. Cuff, a 6-3 guard, was one of the county's best outside shooters and can play the point. Bloznalis said Cuff, who averaged 17 points and 7 assists last season, was sold on Columbia after an April visit.

Jamie Garris, who wrapped up his career at Dunedin with a perfect pitching record this season, has signed with Hillsborough Community College. The right-hander was 10-0 with a team-leading 0.88 ERA. In 56 innings, he struck out 70 batters. Dunedin coach Tom Hilbert said that Garris could also hit at HCC. He batted .459 in limited action at the plate, but showed some power with five doubles and drove in 11 runs.

St. Petersburg Catholic announced a slew of signings, including six football players. Thao Kim and Adam Bruce signed with Baker (Kan.) College; Michael Fuino signed with Fairfield (Conn.) University; Chris Waechter, who set a school record with a 48-yard field goal, signed with Catholic University (Washington D.C.) and Alex Marek signed with Greensboro (N.C.) College. Basketball players David Lopez, Mike Heretick and Brett Stone also signed. Lopez, who was honorable mention all-Pinellas County, and Heretick both signed with the University of Dallas, a Division III school. Stone, a third-team all-county girls player, will attend Eckerd.
