Fire forces evacuation at rehabilitation center
CRYSTAL RIVER -- Patients at Crystal River Health and Rehabilitation Center were evacuated Thursday after an early morning fire. No injuries were reported. Director of Fire Services Mike Schlaudraff said the 5 a.m. fire was caused by a patient who was smoking in bed. Employees sprayed the fire with hand-held extinguishers and managed to put most of it out, he said. The Crystal River Fire Department also helped extinguish the blaze. Patients were allowed to return about an hour later.
Marion County woos leader of social services agency
Patrick Howard, the Department of Children and Families' top administrator in Citrus, Hernando and surrounding counties, is among the finalists for another job: county administrator in Marion County. The Marion County Commission will interview Howard and other finalists late this month or early next month. Howard became district administrator for DCF District 13 -- which covers Citrus, Hernando, Marion, Sumter and Lake counties -- in December 1999. Howard, a retired two-star Marine Corps general, came to DCF after serving more than 30 years in the military.
