2 seniors receive $1,000 musical scholarships

Two graduating high school seniors have won $1,000 scholarships to continue their music studies at the college level from the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association.

Andrea Pitts, 18, daughter of Maria and Jay Pitts, is a 2002 graduate of Boca Ciega High with a 4.0 grade point average. She plans to attend the University of North Florida in Jacksonville to major in music. Pitts has played professionally with local bands and was a featured artist with the Boca Ciega Jazz Band at the Palladium Theater under the direction of bandmaster Frank Williams.

Abigail Fox, 18, daughter of Marilyn and David Fox, is a 2002 graduate of the Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High. She plans to study music at Belmont University in Nashville.

The scholarship fund is a tribute to the late Al Downing, a local jazz musician. The organization promotes the knowledge and appreciation of jazz throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Boca Ciega student to be Australian ambassador

The People to People Student Ambassador Program has recommended Timothy Medeiros, son of Deborah Medeiros of St. Petersburg and the late Fernando Medeiros, for a student ambassadorship to Australia. He will spend three weeks touring the continent with other high school students.

Shortly after he returns to the United States, Medeiros, who will be a junior at Boca Ciega High in the fall, will leave for Washington, D.C., to attend a Presidential Classroom Future World Leaders Summit. The Civil Air Patrol nominated him for the summit, which will include group workshops and discussions on global issues such as human rights, arms control and nationalism.

Local student to attend conference for leaders

Throughout the conference, titled "The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today," she will interact with key government leaders, the media and the international community.

Jacobs, who will be a senior in the International Baccalaureate Program at St. Petersburg High in the fall, is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.
