TAMPA -- During a half-hour span Wednesday night, two children were pulled out of backyard pools in Hillsborough County.
One of them, a 3-year-old boy, died. The other, a 14-year-old girl, was taken to Brandon Hospital, where she was in stable condition Wednesday night.
At about 6 p.m., Jaedan Orellana was found floating in his family's in-ground pool at 11714 Branch Mooring Drive, said Ray Yeakley, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokesman. His mother discovered him unconscious in the shallow end of the pool and started CPR.
A Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy arrived, and he began CPR. When paramedics arrived, they, too, attempted several lifesaving measures. The boy was taken to Town & Country Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities were unsure how long the boy was under water.
During the second incident about 6:30 p.m., 14-year-old Mishka Mims was underwater for about five minutes before she was rescued, said Yeakley.
Her mother found her in the deep end of the family's pool and called paramedics. Mishka was taken to Brandon Hospital. Mishka and her family live at 1407 Lakeshore Ranch Drive in Seffner.
The Sheriff's Office is investigating both cases.
