A retired Army colonel who once worked on Middle East security issues at U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base has been named federal security director for Tampa International Airport.
Dario A. Compain, a 30-year veteran, will oversee all security-related matters at TIA, including potentially hundreds of security and screening personnel. He also will supervise security risk assessment.
Compain's appointment was announced Friday afternoon in Washington by Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta.
Louis Miller, executive director of the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority, said he had not met Compain and did not expect him to arrive until after a training period.
Compain served as the brigade commander of the 18th Military Police Brigade and as a battalion commander of the 504th Military Police Battalion. As the deputy provost marshal of the 1st Infantry Division, Compain planned the division's military police effort in support of operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990 and 1991.
The airport position pays between $105,000 and $150,000 a year.
TAMPA -- A Northwest Airlines flight from Miami to Detroit and Philadelphia made an unscheduled stop at Tampa International Airport Friday after the crew reported losing oil pressure in one engine. The Boeing 727, Flight 994, had 143 passengers on board. The plane landed at Tampa without incident or injury.
