TAMPA -- Two men were shot early Saturday morning -- one fatally -- near a Kennedy Boulevard night club with a history of problems.
According to the Tampa Police Department, Sydney P. Steele, 21, and Kenta Moore, 22, were standing in a parking lot east of Club Atlanta, at Kennedy Boulevard and Fremont Avenue, about 1:55 a.m.
A man driving what police said may have been a light green SUV fired several shots with a handgun and drove away.
Both men were shot in the legs and were transported by Tampa Fire Rescue to Tampa General Hospital.
Steele, who police say lived at 1200 Alcazar Way, died after surgery. Moore was treated and released.
The police said they did not know the motive for the shooting. The shooter remains at large.
Hyde Park North residents have complained for years about Club Atlanta, where they say they regularly hear gunfire.
In September 1999, a 19-year-old Fort Lauderdale man was stabbed inside the club and died minutes later.
In August 2000, former University of South Florida football player Kenyatta Jones was arrested at the club for allegedly carrying a concealed firearm.
