Driven to recycle? Here are the spotsBy MARY JANE PARK© St. Petersburg Times published June 19, 2002 ST. PETERSBURG -- The recycling bins for newspapers, magazines and aluminum cans have vanished from the parking lot at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, 1376 Snell Isle Blvd. NE. The city codes compliance assistance division cited the church in April, requesting that it submit a site plan that would obey setback requirements. The containers sat near some condominiums whose residents had complained of increased traffic and noise. Proper setbacks would establish a buffer zone, division director Sally Eichler said. "My understanding was that they could have them; they just couldn't have them where they were," she said. Residents can take recyclable materials to any of the city's full-service sites, which accept yard waste, newspapers, glass, plastic, cardboard and aluminum, said Bill Sundstrom, administrative coordinator for sanitation. By July 1, they will accept magazines as well. All are open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The addresses are 1000 62nd Ave. NE; 2453 20th Ave. N; 7750 26th Ave. N; 2500 26th Ave. S; 4015 Dr. M.L. King (Ninth) St. S; and 3802 54th Ave. S. The Municipal Marina, 300 Second Ave. SE, takes newspaper, plastic and aluminum. The St. Petersburg Times substation at 3131 13th Ave. N takes newspaper, glass and plastics.
