Signings

Clearwater soccer player Buster Wiand has committed to Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. Wiand was a four-year starter for the Tornadoes and played a big role in the team's 2001 state championship. Wiand also played club soccer for the Dunedin Stirling Rangers and the Black Watch Royals.

Wiand also lettered in swimming and tennis.

Ryan Barbeau of Admiral Farragut Academy has signed to play basketball at Blackburn College, a Division III school in Carlinville, Ill. Barbeau was the captain and point guard for the Blue Jackets last season, averaging 5.7 assists.

Clearwater linebacker and defensive end Jason Greenwood has signed to play football at Jacksonville University, Clearwater coach Tom Bostic said. Jacksonville is entering its fifth season in Division I-AA and is coming off its first winning season.

Katie Bintz of Indian Rocks Christian has signed to play softball at Warner Southern College in Lake Wales, an NAIA school in the Florida Sun Conference. Bintz, a catcher, was a Times all-county honorable mention selection this season, hitting .510 with 21 RBIs.

Baseball

The Tampa Bay Renegades 9-and-under Amateur Athletic Union team finished third in the state in its division recently, qualifying for this month's national championship in Orlando. Chris Frey and Tyler Kellmann were the top hitters. Casey Turgeon, Zack Johnson, Eric Langevin and Sawyer Wilson handled the pitching.

Softball

Teams from the Bahamas, Great Britain and the United States will converge on Plant City on June 27-30 for the Slow Pitch World Cup.

The event will consist of men's and mixed-team competition. A dozen teams will play at least six games each. Plant City Stadium is the headquarters of the International Softball Federation.
