Daily fishing report

Redfish have been the prime target lately on shallow grass flats in Boca Ciega Bay. Large schools of big fish have gathered near the mangroves on high tides.

A quiet approach is needed to prevent these fish from spooking. An electric motor is a great tool for covering ground and locating fish, but a push pole is better for maneuvering into casting range. The best option is to anchor away from the fish and wade into position.

Cooperation and teamwork can keep these redfish pinned down and produce multiple hook-ups. Boats can spread out and surround the school, and the fish can be corralled into a relatively small area. When done properly the fish mill around and never leave the circle.

The heavy wind and rain of the past few days have been challenging. On Sunday the reds showed up right on schedule. Half a dozen boats worked a school, and anglers who waded to the fish had an advantage, catching twice as many. Monday's fishing was hampered by the weather.
