Stanford eliminates Notre Dame at CWS

Sam Fuld and Carlos Quentin homered and Stanford held off Notre Dame 5-3 Tuesday and eliminated the Fighting Irish at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

The Cardinal, CWS runner-up the past two years, improved to 40-0 this season when holding the lead after eight innings.

Stanford plays Thursday against Texas in a rematch of the Longhorns' 8-7 win Monday that put the Cardinal in the elimination round.

Texas needs one win to reach Saturday's championship game of the double-elimination tournament. Stanford must win to force another matchup Friday.

The Gamecocks avenged an 11-0 loss to the Yellow Jackets in the opening round and set up another game against state rival Clemson.

The Tigers and Gamecocks play tonight for the fifth time this season. Clemson is unbeaten in the CWS and needs one win to advance to Saturday's championship, while South Carolina needs to win tonight and again Friday. Clemson was 3-1 against South Carolina this season.
