Local PBS station's transmitter down

Viewers hoping to watch WEDU-Ch. 3 Wednesday afternoon were greeted by a screen full of static, following a breakdown that knocked the Tampa PBS station off the air for hours.

Technicians shut down power to the station's transmitter about 1 p.m. Wednesday, allowing workers to climb the antenna and check out problems that had surfaced over the past few days. But when they attempted to turn the power back on, the transmitter wouldn't resume functioning.

Richard M. Lobo, WEDU's newly hired president and CEO, hoped the station would have the problem resolved by Wednesday evening, but couldn't predict how long repairs might take.
