Alpha Omega ready to clean up at state
By JAMAL THALJI, Times Staff Writer Alpha Omega is ready for another run at the Amateur Athletic Union State Track and Field Championships. Last year West Pasco County's youth track and field club brought back 13 medals from state and sent 12 competitors to the 2001 AAU Junior Olympic Games. This year's group includes several returning state-medal winners. Alpha Omega qualified 25 athletes for state at a regional meet held at Ridgewood High School's Ram Booster Stadium. The AAU state meet begins today and runs through Sunday at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The top four in each event qualify for the 2002 AAU Junior Olympic games to be held in Knoxville, Tenn., from Aug. 7-10. Here are the qualifiers: Primary (age 7): Katherine Jacob will compete in the 800 meters and the long jump. Andrew Lang will be in the shot put and the long jump. Chris Unger and Markell Holmes will be in the shot put. Sub-Bantam (age 9): Jonathan Thompson will run in the 100 and 200 and compete in the long jump. Anthony Fleres will be in the 800, 1,500 and long jump. Lizzy Clum will be in the triathlon, a combination of the high jump, shot put and 200, as well as the long jump. Bantam (age 10): Kelly Wiegland will compete in the triathlon. Adrianna Cowap will throw the shot put. Sub-Midget (age 11): Jake Shellenberger will run in the 800 and 1,500. Midget (age 12): Stephanie Blue will throw the discus and shot put. Terry Winthrop will be in the shot put and high jump. Samantha Urgo will be in the high jump. Lea Weber will take part in the pentathlon, a combination of the 80-meter hurdles, the high and long jumps, the shot put and the 800. Young girls and boys (age 13): Robyn Gray will run in the 1,500 and 3,000 and compete in the high jump. Stephanie Fleres will be in the high jump, the 1,500 and the 3,000. Morgan Shellenberger is in the pentathlon, which in her age division combines the shot put, the high and long jumps, the 100 hurdles and the 800. Heather Bertling will run the 100 hurdles. Returning state AAU discus champion and runner-up shot put champion Leon Holmes will compete in both events again. Intermediate boys and girls (age 14): Tasha Holmes will throw the discus and shot put. Young women (age 16): River Ridge standout Danielle Coyle will run in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000. River Ridge's Zachary McDevitt will be in the triple jump. Natricia Wade will throw the discus and shot put. Ridgewood's Andrea Sablan will throw the discus. Young men (age 16): Ridgewood state-qualifier Michael Selfe will compete in the high jump.
