Keller voices his frustration

SEOUL, South Korea -- Dissension among the United States surfaced Wednesday, when reserve goalkeeper Kasey Keller expressed frustration at sitting.

After starting the first two games in 1998 and making several key saves during his career, Keller has not played at this World Cup and will not start against Germany on Friday.

"Whatever personally you wish you were doing, you wish you were involved. You wish you were treated a different way. You wish that people would be honest with you," said Keller, who has 28 shutouts in 60 national appearances. "In this situation, the first thing is to make sure that you're supporting your teammates and helping the team achieve something because in three months' time, there's always something else.

"And if the something else means MLS ... is stabilized and the national team is going to the point where it's not a surprise that we're in the quarterfinal because of the groundwork that's been placed now, that's part of it."

Before the opener, coach Bruce Arena said he was considering alternating keepers in the first round, but Brad Friedel has been superb.

Asked if he believed team officials had not been honest with him, Keller said, "There's no doubt about that."

Tuesday, Arena referred to Keller as "a great professional," saying while Keller had not been "jumping for joy" as a reserve, "he is very happy for the team."

Wednesday, Arena appeared irritated and said, "I'm not going to deal with that."

DONOVAN'S FUTURE: Landon Donovan might stay in MLS beyond 2002 and won't make any decisions until after the World Cup, his agent, Richard Motzkin, said.

BITTER ITALIANS: Ahn Jung-hwan, who scored the winner in South Korea's upset of Italy, might not be welcomed back by his Italian club next season. "This guy played mediocre football for us, and now all of a sudden, he is a phenomenon," Perugia president Luciano Gaucci said. Owner Luciano Gaucci said: "That guy will never again set foot in Perugia! I am not going to pay the salary of a guy who has been the ruin of Italian soccer."

NO REPLAYS: FIFA, stung by criticism that its referees have made too many mistakes, said it won't introduce instant replays. Calling on a fourth official to study replays would disrupt the rhythm of the game and remove part of the sport's tradition, it said.
