TAMPA -- It wasn't an easy decision, but coach Sallie Scudder pulled the trigger, leaving Berkeley Prep for her alma mater, Plant.

She inherits a Panthers program with a solid foundation. Under Augie Quintero, Plant went 75-29 and reached the Class 5A state final in 2000.

Quintero was let go after this season, according to Plant officials, because of the school's push to bring in more coaches who teach on campus.

Quintero was not a teacher, while Scudder teaches calculus, something she has done for more than 10 years, including a five-year stint at Plant in the early 1990s. In that time, she was an assistant volleyball and softball coach.

Scudder became Berkeley Prep's head softball coach in 1996 and in seven seasons went 135-81, including two region final finishes.

"Coming to Plant was a very, very difficult choice," Scudder said. "I had a great group of players and parents at Berkeley, and I was very happy there. I have nothing but good things to say about Berkeley.

"But this was a chance to come coach at my alma mater," the 1986 graduate said, "and I couldn't pass it up. Plant has a great feeder system from several Little Leagues in that area, so the talent is there.

"They also have a beautiful facility and a lot of support from the parents and community. I'm very excited about the opportunity."

Scudder played volleyball, basketball and slow-pitch softball for the Panthers.
