300 years of American art
Some of the biggest and best names in American art are represented in "American Anthem: 300 Years of Painting from the Butler Institute of American Art," opening at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art on Friday. The star is Winslow Homer's Snap the Whip (above), but the 55 paintings are a primer to the history of American art, from colonial portraiture -- one of George Washington by Rembrandt Peale -- to 20th century luminaries such as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Chuck Close and Helen Frakenthaler. The museum, at 5401 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota, is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. General admission is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors. Free admission for children 12 and younger, museum members and Florida students and teachers with ID. Admission includes the art museum, Circus Museum, Ca' d'Zan (reservations suggested) and the grounds. On Monday, admission to the art museum only is free. For information, call (941) 359-5700.
