Music that explores the heart

Dar Williams told the St. Petersburg Times last year that she's more than a folk singer. Though she got her start on the Northeast coffeehouse circuit and she has been known to croon a political tune or two, Williams, 35, says she is always "curious to find out who I am."

That's why The Green World, Williams' latest, incorporates a full band behind the chanteuse and her acoustic guitar, giving her a bit more punch.

Williams is known for wit and warmth at her live show, but music is her real strength. Graceful melodies, wry lyrics and an achingly sweet alto make her set something to relish.

Her songs explore gender roles. From the playfulness of a child's naive androgyny to a stereotypically sexist beau, Williams' characters are drawn fully, and her stories are more provocative than those of other "folkies."

Dar Williams performs with the Nields and Lorna Bracewell at 8 p.m. Saturday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. Tickets are $20 to $40. (727) 791-7400. Williams also plays at 8 p.m. Sunday at Players Theatre, 838 N Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Tickets are $19. (941) 365-2494.

Good music, by any name

New York electronica duo I Am The World Trade Center has decided to stick with its name, though after the terrorist attacks in September, it briefly shortened the name -- or would that be broadened it? -- to I Am The World.

Now, with Twin Towers back, the boyfriend-girlfriend duo of Daniel Geller and Amy Dykes continues to make fresh, danceable, quirky pop. The two record most samples on a laptop, then douse Dykes' coy, childlike vocals over the hodgepodge. The sound is happy, upbeat. Economical, too. I.A.T.W.T.C. recorded its debut, Out of The Loop, for just 200 bucks in Geller's Brooklyn apartment. The followup, Tight Connection, is due next month.

I Am The World Trade Center performs with VHS or Beta and Stargees and Geekrok at 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Orpheum, 1902 Avenida Republica de Cuba, Tampa. $5 advance, $6 day of show. (813) 248-9500.
