Let's go to the hop
By JORGE SANCHEZ, Times Staff Writer Summer's here, and the time is right for dancing on the boardwalk at Kibbie's Dockside restaurant in Homosassa. A Fabulous '50s Hop will start tonight at 6 at Kibbie's, 11210 Halls River Road. Featured entertainers are Eddie & the Cruzers and special guest Tommy Mara, a former member of the Crests and the Saints. There is no admission charge in the traditional sense; a non-perishable food item gets you inside the doors. The event is a benefit for Citrus United Basket, an Inverness food bank. The two groups will perform music from the early days of rock 'n roll. Mara started out in music in the early 1950s. He recorded a few songs and then dropped out of sight, earning him the nickname "The Lost Crooner." He resurfaced in Florida eight years ago and began his comeback, eventually joining the Saints. Since then, Mara and the Saints have been very busy in the Tampa Bay oldies music scene. The band also performed at Curtis Peterson Auditorium three months ago as part of an oldies concert with Bill Haley's Original Comets. The party also will feature lots of fun activities such as a Hula Hoop contest, a best '50s outfit contest and dance contests.
