Mike Hampton reportBy KEITH NIEBUHR, Times Staff Writer© St. Petersburg Times published June 21, 2002 LAST OUTING: In a 20-10 loss to the New York Yankees on Wednesday, the Rockies pitcher and Homosassa native earned a no decision after allowing 7 runs (all earned) on 7 hits over 5 innings, walking 1 and striking out 4. He was touched for one home run. Hampton went 0-for-2 at the plate. NEXT SCHEDULED START: Monday at Los Angeles. THE SKINNY: Staked to a four-run lead in the fifth, the left-hander allowed three runs that inning and was pulled. The Denver Post reported Hampton looked out of synch and was forced to grind out every pitch. Hampton was encouraged by his previous outing in Boston, but this performance was another setback in a season of disappointing efforts for baseball's highest-paid pitcher. STAT OF THE WEEK: Hampton has allowed seven runs in three straight starts. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: The Yankees' "line looked like a zip code," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle told the Associated Press. "It wasn't pretty. I don't know of many games I've been involved in where the team I've been associated with scored seven runs in an inning and lost." © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
