Friends and co-workers of Ed Meyer, a cancer patient, will have a benefit fundraiser Saturday in the parking lot of the Citrus County Courthouse on N Apopka Avenue.

The fundraiser will be from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will include hot dogs, hamburgers, a flea market, prize drawings and live music. Local classic rockers Strange Brew are scheduled to perform from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Meyer, 48, worked as a mechanic for the Citrus County Fleet Management Office. His cancer has progressed to the level that he's unable to work and is confined to a medical treatment facility. His supervisor at Fleet Maintenance, Ernest C. Hutman, said his co-workers and friends organized the fundraiser.

"We just want to be able to do something to help," Hutman said. "We're trying to do what we can."

Hutman received permission from the County Commission to use the parking lot for the benefit.

Meyer has been employed with the county since 1994. Not only is he suffering from cancer, but his wife, Lynn, also has multiple sclerosis, Hutman said.

The band Strange Brew agreed to perform for free because one of its members is a friend of Meyer's. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to Meyer.
