Wrestling

Cael Sanderson, the only four-time NCAA national champion with an undefeated record (159-0) heads a list of eight college All-Americans on staff for the Charles Championship Wrestling Camp, scheduled for Tuesday-Saturday at the USF Sun Dome. Sanderson wrestled at Iowa State.

Shawn Charles, an assistant coach at Nebraska and two-time All-American at Arizona State, put together the all-star coaching staff and the Guardian Wrestling Club of Sickles High will sponsor the event.

The coaching staff includes: Barry Weldon, an assistant coach at Oklahoma; Stephen Abas, a two-time NCAA national champion; Marco Sanchez, a two-time NCAA All-American at Arizona State; Kevin Lake, head coach at MacMurray College (Ill.); Bryan Snyder, a three-time All-American at Nebraska; and Pat Smith, an assistant coach at Oklahoma State.

For those staying in USF dorms, the cost is $285 for the week and $200 for those staying off campus.

Job openings

Hillsborough High's new junior varsity coach, Johnny Green, is seeking applicants for assistant coaches. Those interested may call (813) 767-8865 after 8p.m.

Football

The Hillsborough High junior varsity meeting for parents will be at 7p.m. July18 in the gym.

All prospective junior varsity and varsity players are encouraged to attend offseason workouts Wednesday through Friday from 3 to 6p.m.

Basketball

The Seth Greenberg Basketball Camp for beginners to advanced players entering grades 1-10 has four more sessions: July8-12, July15-19, July22-26 and July29-Aug.2.

Teaching stations will work on shooting, passing, dribbling, one-on-one play, footwork and individual and team defense. Other activities include Hot Shot, NBA 2 Ball, Knock-Out and fullcourt, halfcourt and 3-on-3 games.

Full-day sessions are Monday-Thursday 8:45a.m. to 4p.m. and Friday 8:45 a.m. to noon, and half-day sessions are 8:45a.m. to noon. The camp is at the USF Sun Dome under the direction of the USF coaching staff, and campers receive a T-shirt, basketball and camp picture.

Hillsborough Community College will host camps for youth age 10-16 from 9a.m. to 4p.m. July8-12 and July15-19. The camps will be conducted at the Dale Mabry campus by members of the HCC coaching staff. The fee is $125. For information, call 253-7446.

Tampa Catholic will conduct two weeks of camps for players in grades 2-9. The camps will be held Monday-Friday and July8-12 from 9a.m. to 3p.m.

The fee is $100 with discounts for multiple weeks.

Wharton will hold camps for players in grades 2-9 on Monday-Friday, July8-12 and July15-19 with daily sessions running from 12:30 to 4p.m.

The fee is $95 for each session. There is a $10 discount for family and multiple-week signups.

Baseball

The Oldsmar Thunder 9-and-under AAU team is seeking players. For information, call John DiSanto at (813) 854-3015.

Softball

Teams from the Bahamas, Great Britain and the United States will converge on Plant City on June27-30 for the inaugural Slow Pitch World Cup.

The event will consist of men's and mixed-team competition. Approximately a dozen teams will play at least six games each.

Plant City Stadium is the headquarters of the International Softball Federation.

The Tampa Coyotes of the Florida Half-Century Softball Association are seeking players 49 and older. For information, call Tony Alfonso at (813) 975-1858 or Frank Harrell (727) 576-4516.

Summer camps

Tampa Prep is hosting a variety of sports camps, including:

Wrestling: Monday-Friday, 1 to 4p.m. for age 9-16. Contact Bruno Quattrone.

Girls basketball: Monday-Friday, 8:30 to 11:30a.m. for athletes entering grades 6-10. Contact Suzanne Marfise.

Boys basketball: Monday-Friday, 1 to 4p.m. for athletes entering grades 6-10. Contact Joe Fenlon.

All camps cost $125 for a week.

Hockey

Registration is under way for players 6-and-under at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon and the Tampa Bay Skating Academy in Oldsmar. For information, call (813) 684-7825 in Brandon and (813) 854-4010 in Oldsmar.
