Carjacking is quickly foiled by tracking device

An alleged carjacker was arrested in east Tampa early Saturday morning about an hour after reportedly stealing a Cadillac Escalade that was equipped with a tracking system.

Lafayette Colvin, 27, was stopped behind another car at a downtown Tampa traffic light about 2 a.m. when a man exited the car, pointed a rifle at him and ordered him out.

Tampa police used the OnStar tracking system inside the Escalade to pursue it.

OnStar uses a global positioning system tracked by a satellite in space.

Randall Morris Green, 38, of Tampa was captured by police after abandoning the vehicle at 46th Street and 18th Avenue. He was charged with grand theft auto, burglary of a conveyance and felony fleeing and eluding.
