MIAMI BEACH -- Gov. Jeb Bush touted education as a way to aid law enforcement as he accepted an endorsement Saturday from the Fraternal Order of Police for his re-election campaign.
Children who benefit from their education now will grow up to be good citizens, making the streets safer, he said. Improving literacy and graduation rates will decrease the number of arrests officers have to make, Bush said.
The Fraternal Organization of Police also endorsed Bush in 1998 when he was first elected governor.
Philip Cameron, the group's president, praised Bush for the 10-20-Life law that carries mandatory sentences for people who use guns during crimes. He also lauded Bush for increased benefits for the families of officers who are wounded or slain on the job.
Bush defended his statewide testing and vouchers policies against the criticisms of two of his Democratic challengers, former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and Tampa attorney Bill McBride. State Sen. Daryl Jones is also running for the Democratic nomination.
