Mets play vs. Yanks class act

© St. Petersburg Times, published June 23, 2002

These sports "Talking Heads" amuse me. They decided ahead of time the Roger Clemens/Mets meeting June 15 should be a bean-ball contest, and because it wasn't, the Mets are a bunch of wimps.

Isn't it a shame these guys who get paid huge amounts to play baseball, played baseball except for one warning pitch behind Clemens? I think that Mets pitcher Shawn Estes and catcher Mike Piazza homering off Clemens was better revenge.

Table Vinny trade talks

Give it a rest! Lightning fans are sick of hearing the media write and talk about trading Vinny Lecavalier (If all else fails, trade Vinny, June 16). Don't you know what no means?

I have had a subscription to the Times for 10 years, and I will cancel it if you don't stop writing this junk. If you don't have anything else to write about, then don't write anything.

Instead, you and other media just keep dredging up old stories.

Selig's conspiracy theory

A baseball scenario: Bud Selig is commissioner. Selig's family owns the Milwaukee Brewers. Brewers tank the season. Selig contracts the Expos. Dispersal draft held. Brewers have first pick and get Vladimir Guerrero. Collusion? For the good of baseball, the only thing that should be contracted is Bud "the car salesman" Selig. Move the Expos to Washington and get out of office, Bud.

Bucs WRs not perfect

Good article about the wide receiver strength (Bucs find strength in (WR) numbers, June 16) except for the beginning where you insist on sugarcoating mistakes of the past.

First, you say Keyshawn Johnson is among the elite receivers in the league. Jerry Rice, who recently visited the Tampa Bay area, says Johnson should start earning his salary. You mention Karl Williams is a consistent player. Does that mean he regularly shows up at the pay window? He is a decent receiver, but he is still on the team whereas others who consistently went across the middle and caught balls on third down have been shown the gate.

I am looking forward to some excitement on the offense, but let's try to be more honest in our evaluations.
