Fourteen individuals and two teams from Pasco County were among the 7,000-plus amateur athletes competing this month in Palm Beach County. Here are the highlights:
ARCHERY: Three county archers had strong showings, including two Sunshine State Games records.
Sandy Thater of Port Richey won the Adult Female Bowhunter Freestyle Limited division in both the International and 900 Round competitions. Thater set a Games record with a score of 223 out of 300 in the International, then won the 900 series with 767.
In the Cub Female Barebow division, Felicia Thater of Port Richey set a Games record with a 900 Round 720 and also won in the 25 Target 3-D Marked ranks with 159, 37 better than her closest competitor.
James Pettit of Port Richey won the Adult Male Bowhunter Freestyle division in both competitions. Pettit scored 274 in the International, contested in wind and rain, then won the 900 with 864.
SWIMMING: Four county swimmers, all from the New Port Richey Aquatics swim team, combined to place in 16 events.
India Surlis (Girls 13-14) took second in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:19.95) and placed in four other events: 200 breaststroke (3:01.31, sixth), 200 freestyle (2:24.47, ninth), 50 freestyle (30.56, ninth) and 100 freestyle (1:06.85, 10th).
Joseph Geschke (Boys 10-and-under) took seventh in the 200-meter individual medley (1:43.38) and the 100 backstroke (1:37.38) and eighth in the 50 free (37.73); 50 back (47.09); 100 free (1:23.19) and 100 butterfly (1:43.38).
Chris Obara took eighth in the 100 back (1:17.80), 13th in the 100 free (1:05.65) and 15th in the 50 free (30.10).
Mike Mansfield took 14th in the 50 free (29.70) and 100 free (1:06.74).
ROLLER HOCKEY: New Port Richey's Hyper Heat, coached by Bill Doucette, won two of four matches in the under-10 division. The Heat beat the Kissimmee Storm 7-2, lost to the South Florida Venom 8-0, then beat the Deltona Devils 5-4 before losing to the Roller Rebels 4-3.
BASKETBALL: The New Port Richey Green Wave won one of four games in the girls high school division. The Green Wave lost to Palm Beach Gardens 50-29, Ruff Ryders 50-45 and Daytona Divas 65-46 and defeated Lake Wales 55-34. Crystal Ayers had a game-high 18 points against the Ruff Ryders and a team-high 11 against the Divas. Charity Kidder scored 14 against Lake Wales.
OTHERS: In badminton, New Port Richey's John Obara, 43, won the Senior Men's Doubles crown with Michael Anthony of Tampa. ... In boxing, Zephyrhills' Marlon Farr won the 178-pound class in the Novice division. Jason Wood, also of Zephyrhills, took second in the 15-to-16-year-old Junior Olympic 119-pound class. ... In judo, 7-year-old Carley Patton of Zephyrhills won the 61-to-72-pound division, while 10-year-old Kate Patton of Zephyrhills took second in her division. ... In wrestling, Bradley Blevins of Land O'Lakes took first in the Schoolboy 100-pound class, while Aaron Blevins, also of Land O'Lakes, took third in the 150-pound ranks. Jesse Kueber of Land O'Lakes won the schoolboy 115-pound class, while Zack Clements of Land O'Lakes took second in the midget 112-pound division.
