The Mike Hampton reportBy KEITH NIEBUHR, Times Staff Writer© St. Petersburg Times published June 26, 2002 LAST OUTING: In a 4-1 win over Los Angeles on Monday, the Colorado pitcher and Homosassa native earned his first victory in three weeks. Hampton allowed 1 earned run on 5 hits over 6 innings, walking 1 and striking out 2. He was touched for a homer. Hampton went 1-for-2 at the plate with a home run. He is batting .375. NEXT SCHEDULED START: Saturday at Seattle. THE SKINNY: Hampton honored ex-Houston teammate Darryl Kile, who died in his sleep Saturday in a Chicago hotel room, by wearing Kile's number on his cap. Hampton earned his first victory in six starts against Los Angeles since joining the Rockies. He was 0-4 in his previous five starts against the Dodgers, allowing 26 earned runs in 261/3 innings. Hampton threw 51 strikes in 74 pitches. He allowed a Shawn Green homer in the first inning, but followed with a home run of his own in the second. STAT OF THE WEEK: Hampton broke into the majors with Seattle in 1993. He went 1-3 that season. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "I was trying to think about pitching as much as I could," Hampton told the Associated Press.
